The Right Writing

Mundane details

People laugh at space ships for not having bathrooms, but do we really want to read about or watch the characters using the bathroom?  Nobody wants to read about every dinner your character has, but how will readers know that he eats otherwise?

The answer is that if the supplies are there, people can assume that your characters carried out their functions normally.  A single mention that bathrooms or food exists is enough to tell your readers that the characters use these things without going into the details.

There are, of course, exceptions.  I don’t want to read about how your character eats if they’re working an office job.  If your character is working an office job on another planet, however, how they eat intrigues me.  If they are having a special feast, I also want to know.  Mundane details are interesting only if there is some type of variation.  If they’re in a survival scenario or from an extremely different culture, I want to know everything
