- Try making a story of a different length. If your characters don’t give you novel ideas, try writing a short story about them.
- Maybe the setting and characters aren’t right for each other. Maybe if those same characters were in another, more challenging place, they would create and drive a plot.
- Figure out a way for two characters to dislike each other. Even if all your characters are best friends and would never normally fight, they could still hurt each other because of misunderstandings. Then make a plot out of the feelings the enemies have.
- Unrequited love works pretty much the same way as fighting, as far as driving the plot goes. Sprinkle a little here and there to make an instant storyline.
- Make something happen and see how they react.
- Give them a common interest. Their successes and failures in that interest might just cause a plot.
